Overview
Ancient Decompression Techniques for Deep Muscle Release & Circulation
While traditional massage therapy relies on positive pressure—pushing down into muscle tissue—cupping therapy uses negative pressure (suction) to lift the skin, fascia, and underlying muscle layers upward. This negative pressure creates space within restricted tissues, allowing fresh blood, oxygen, and nutrients to surge into stagnant areas.
At Willow Wellness Centre in Dorval, our registered massage therapists integrate stationary and dynamic cupping techniques into our bodywork sessions. Whether you are an athlete pursuing peak physical recovery or someone dealing with stubborn upper back tightness, cupping offers deep myofascial relief without excessive downward pressure.
Benefits
- Fascial Decompression & Release: Lifts tight connective tissue (fascia) away from underlying structures, breaking up dense adhesions and restoring smooth movement.
- Enhanced Blood Flow & Circulation: Draws fresh, oxygen-rich blood directly to congested muscle tissues while flushing out metabolic cellular waste.
- Pain Relief for Deep-Seated Tightness: Rapidly relieves stubborn trigger points in high-tension zones like the upper back, shoulders, hips, and IT bands.
- Improved Range of Motion: Softens rigid muscles and joint surrounding tissues to improve overall athletic flexibility and posture.
- Reduced Muscle Soreness: Accelerates post-workout recovery by easing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and systemic tightness.
Ideal For
Cupping therapy is an excellent option if you are experiencing:
- Chronic upper back, neck, or shoulder tightness that feels unresponsive to standard massage.
- Athletic fatigue, heavy limbs, or intense muscle soreness from training.
- Postural strain from extended periods working at a desk or driving.
- Old injury sites with thick scar tissue or restricted fascial movement.
What to Expect
- Targeted Assessment: Your therapist evaluates your tissue mobility, health history, and areas of primary tightness.
- Warm-Up & Suction Application: After applying natural glide oil, specialized silicone or glass cups are placed on key focus areas.
- Stationary & Dynamic Cupping: Cups may be left stationary for several minutes or glided across muscle channels (gliding/dynamic cupping) for a broad fascial stretch.
- Post-Treatment Guidance & Receipt: You will receive advice on staying hydrated and keeping the treated areas warm following your session. Official insurance receipts from a registered massage therapist (RMT) are provided.
What Are "Cupping Marks"?
It is normal to see circular discoloration (cupping marks) on the skin following a session.
- Not Traditional Bruises: Unlike trauma-induced bruises, these marks are caused by blood, cellular fluid, and toxins being drawn up to the surface layer of tissue.
- Temporary: Marks typically range from light pink to deep purple depending on the level of stagnation in the area, and usually fade within 3 to 10 days.
